Top 10 Running Backs of the 2020 NFL Season

4/11/2021

What a great season it's been for running backs. We have a 2,000 yard rusher this season, who only 6 other players were able to do, with big names such as Barry Sanders, Chris Johnson, Terrell Davis, Eric Dickerson, O.J. Simpson and Jamal Lewis. We also are seeing the future of all around backs, who can rush and catch passes efficiently. Rookie running backs looking like the future of the league with 2 1000 yard rushers and 3 rookie backs to make this list.

  1. Derrick Henry

Who else would I put here? Rushing for 1,000 yards is an amazing achievement for any running back. But rushing for 2000 YARDS is on a whole different level. The reigning OPOY has been a force to be reckoned with, leading the Titans to an 11-5 record. With a whopping 126.7 rushing yards per game, every Defensive Coordinator had to plan for how to stop Derrick Henry. Even if they blitz every play, Derrick Henry will find a way to get yardage. From viral stiff arm to viral run, Derrick Henry is a highlight machine who is definitely worthy of the best running back in the league.

2. Dalvin Cook

Talk about amazing. In 14 games, Davin Cook rushed for 1,557 yards, caught passes for 361 yards, and a whopping 16 touchdowns. What a beast. He is a young, fast, and versatile running back who can be used in so many ways. He will be the future of the Vikings for so many years.

3. Alvin Kamara

The definition of an all around running back. He propelled the Saints offense to a new level with an injured wide receiver core and an inconsistent and old Drew Brees. He was the bright spot. He was the Saint's offense this season, without him, the Saints would most likely miss playoff contention. His stats may not be the flashiest, with only 932 rushing yards, but he still had 16 touchdowns and 756 receiving yards.

4. Nick Chubb

Nick Chubb only played 12 games but he was still able to get over 1000 yards. Let me remind you this is also with Kareem Hunt swapping out with him every now and then. Nick Chubb anchored one of the best rushing attacks in the league and had the third most yards-per-attempt so he deservedly gets this spot for the best running backs of 2020

5. Aaron Jones

Aaron Jones was extremely good in his contract season with the Packers, rushing for 1104 yards and 9 touchdowns. He was overshadowed by MVP Aaron Rodgers but was a staple on the Packers offense. Hopefully he does not go into free agency and the packers can sign him to a long term contract or a franchise tag.

6. Johnathan Taylor

After an inconsistent first half of the season, Johnathan Taylor shot off like a bottle rocket in the second half. In the first 8 games of the season, he rushed for 416 yards. In the last 8 games of the season, he rushed for 753 yards. If he rushed for that same amount at the biginning of the season, he would of had over 1500 rushing yards, right behind Dalvin Cook. Look out for year 2, because Johnathan Taylor is going to explode in his sophomore year. Quote me on that.

7. Josh Jacobs

Josh Jacobs has established himself as one of the best backs in the NFL early into his career. The former OROY candidate followed his strong rookie performance with another 1000 yard season. He has become the center of the raiders offense, letting Derek Carr play action to make easy passes. Whatever team he is on, he will be a 1000 yard rusher. He is a rare powerback who will be used a lot in the NFL.

8. James Robinson

By far the biggest surprise of the season, James Robinson, an undrafted rookie, gets about a day's notice about him starting for the Jaguars, and puts up a 1000 yard season. And he did all of this behind a below average O-Line. James Robinson literally seems like the only bright spot on the Jag's offense besides D.J. Chark. He might go into a sophomore slump next year but that should not deter the fact an undrafted free agent had 1070 rushing yards in his first season.

9. David Montgomery

After the Bear's 5-1 start to the season, the Bear's offense slowed down dramatically. They needed to find a new center of their offense. With their passing game being terrible, they turned to David Montgomery and he did not disappoint. He had the same amount of rushing yards as James Robenson with 1070. He also managed to get 8 touchdowns too. He will get a much needed expanded role in the Bears next season.

10. J.K. Dobbins

J.K. Dobbins. I know you weren't expecting that. The rookie has the most yards per attempt as an RB with a whopping 6.0. He will be the Raven's future back, fitting right it with the number 1 rushing attack in the NFL. He put up an amazing 805 yards while only starting 1 game. And in the 1 game he started in, he had 7.0 yards per attempt.
